Taxpayers Group Calls for Immediate Stop to Douglas County Voucher Program

(Denver, CO July 6, 2011)  Taxpayers for Public Education (TFPE), a bi-partisan Colorado taxpayers and parents group, today filed a motion asking the Denver District Court to put an immediate stop to the Douglas County voucher program.

The motion for a preliminary injunction was filed as part of the TFPE suit against the Douglas County School District, the Douglas County School District Board of Education, the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado State Board of Education.

“Stopping the illegal voucher program before it can be fully implemented will help families feel more secure about the upcoming school year,” said Anne Kleinkopf, Director, TFPE.  “When the Court ultimately finds the program to be unlawful, the District won’t have to repay money to the state and students won’t have to switch schools mid-year.”

The motion contends that the voucher program violates the Colorado State Constitution because it diverts monies from the state’s public school fund to private schools.  The motion also claims that DCSD has abandoned its responsibility to educate District students by handing control over to private schools.
